Word On Holiday Health

Summers here and we're all dreaming of exotic travels but research shows we're likely to worry less about bad weather and poor location than being ill whilst away.  It’s estimated that around a third of us have had our holiday blighted by illness yet a alarming number of us will pack their bags this year either having not taken the right precautions or won’t take simple medications for common illnesses.

Holiday Health Check List: At least two months before you depart for your holiday ensure that you have all the necessary vaccinations.

Travel insurance is essential for all travellers. Good travel insurance packages will cover such eventualities as medical fees if treatment is required while abroad and the cost of repatriation.

In addition, remember to apply for and take with you an E111 form if you are on holiday in Europe - the Department of Health's website (www.dh.gov.uk) has more information on this form. Every individual member of your group will need to complete an E111 form.

Travellers who have a medical condition, that may affect their ability to fly safely should contact their GP or airline for advice.

Jet lag doesn't have to spoil your trip, even if you are flying long distances. Simple steps such as avoiding alcohol, drinking plenty of water and managing your sleep patterns can help.

First Aid & Holiday Health Kit An estimated 90% of illnesses when travelling are gastro-intestinal upsets so make sure you pack indigestion and anti-nausea treatments, an anti-diarrhoea treatment and oral rehydration powders for children.

Water purification tablets may be a good idea too if you are doubtful about local water supplies.

Simple painkillers such as paracetamol and anti-histamine tablets for allergies.

Protect your skin with sunscreen (factor 20 minimum) and aftersun moisturiser and limit/regulate your exposure to the sun, especially if your fair skinned.

Prepare for bugs by ensuring you pack an insect repellent and antiseptic cream.

Remember to insure childrens heads and eyes are protected from the sun. Look out for the CE mark on sunglasses and make sure they are wrap around for maximum eye protection

A small pack of plasters, bandages, tape, scissors and tweezers may come in useful.

Though it may seem obvious, it is amazing how many people forget to take plenty of their usual medications and extra to allow for delays. Also carry your medication in your hand bagagge, or on your person just in case your luggage becomes displaced
